Oilguard

Beach Protection

Wet tear resistant oil absorbent water repellent non-woven fabric

Developed by HeiQ and its partners TWE and BST, Oilguard is an oil-absorbing, water-repelling, non-woven fabric for oil relief efforts. The product is intended for beach protection against oil spills and is applied to the shoreline. The Oilguard fabric is up to 6 yards wide and several hundred yards long and uses selective absorption technologies. This allows for the fabric to absorb crude oil yet repelling the seawater.

HeiQ won the Swiss Technology Award 2010 for Oilguard.

Working principle
  • Needle punched non-woven, wet tear-resistant and rot-proof polyester fabric
  • Treated with fluorine-free, ecologically harmless water-repellent product based on polyurethane technology
  • Sea water saturated non-woven takes up to 1200% of the fabric dry weight
  • Crude oil replaces fresh and sea water from the wet tear resistant non-woven fabric in good displacement ratio oil to water up to 6:1
Areas of application
  • Surface oil spills
  • Preventive off shore and shore protection
  • Protection of the ground around drilling holes
Properties
  • Material: polyester, regenerated fibres
  • Structure: needle punched non-woven
  • Treatment: HeiQ Barrier Oilguard 2.0
  • Delivery form max. 200 m x 4 m
  • Approx. weight: 400 g/m2
  • Shelf life: of dry-stored rolls: min. 5 years
  • Tox and excotox: non-hazardous
Product use
  • Roll textile ahead of the arrival of an oil spill on the beach and fix it by sand anchoring technique
  • Remove fabric after spill or replace it if saturated
  • Dispose fabric ideally by combustion, e.g. cement production plant
